How is going the European tour? Many singers are deleting all dates in Europe because of recent events. Aren’t you afraid?
No. I’m not afraid. When it’s time for me to go, it’s time for me to go. All I really care about is my dog. My dog, my true lover Lola, that’s all I care about. To me? I don’t give a fuck, I don’t care. I’m not straight off any of that kind of stuff. But I had a wonderful time, and adored it and it’s been amazing. And it’s my first headline tour in Europe and I wanna keep comin’ back. By the way I’m not scared by anything like that. I don’t fear anything. No fear in my life, because, thank God, I don’t fear another person and I don’t fear like revenge or such things ‘cause when it’s your time, it’s your time. That’s it. It’s God’s plan. It has to be, that’s what I like to think. If God wants me to come, than it’s time to go. If he wants me to stay, I stay. That’s it.
Recently Marley Marl, Craig G and Donald D were in Italy for a jam and they said that in the US only a few really follow the underground scene, that only people like Jay Z (for example) has a large group of fans. What do you think about it?
I don’t think it’s true. I think whether I’m in Canada, or America, in Europe or Australia my shows are all the same. Mainstream is always going to be mainstream. Underground is called underground for a reason: it’s not for the masses. So it’s like a… of course it’s mo’ smaller. You know I think Drake, I love Drake’s music, but I don’t make music like Drake so I’m not gonna held forty-thousand people in the stadium because I’m not rapping about girls and love I don’t do radium monster, so it’s a smaller crowd. Well, I go all around the world, it’s the same thing. That’s a good living, that’s a blessing, I’m happy with my life. So, you have to be true to your heart and you will do what you believe in. And if you make art and if five-hundred people come instead of five-thousand it’s okay. If it’s a thousand instead of ten thousand, it’s okay. That’s the art form you choose, you know. I would rather stay true to what I do and care to the people like and that embrace my music, than trying to do something different for business reasons and then risk losing everything. And I wouldn’t feel right looking in the mirror myself.
There isn’t a big hype around the hip hop scene in America. You can be underground but you have to be consistent. And maybe they’re not putting videos all the time, putting a lot of music, touring… I just made a hundred and sixteen shows, so if you are not touring like and working like that and putting on music than maybe you gonna think that. Tech N9ne, Vinnie Paz and Evidence, one of my best friends, all these guys, they did great, it’s underground. But you’ve got to stay busy, to stay active. ACTIVE.
Finally: earlier this month you have released the mix-tape “Underground Monsters” and since July you’re out with “Silver Tongue Devil”: how is the fans’ feedback?
Silver Tongue Devil was a #2 album in Canada and in Billboard top it has been #2 album in two countries and I think feedback was great. The Underground Monsters was just like more a mixtape type with other young rappers. I think people will like it, but Silver Tongue Devil had a very good response. Well, Underground Monsters was fun too, but there are more songs that are left over with other rappers. I still like the sound and I wanted to give other rappers a chance to be heard.
You’re very productive, you can release even 2 or 3 projects in a year: are you working on something new?
Yeah, the whole album done it’s all produced by Evidence and then my next album is already done and I like have 30/40 other songs sitting around. Well, I guess when I go home I will have a tour in Australia, a tour in America and about 60 dates in Europe and then I’ll take off for four months and I’ll go jamming in studio everyday and I’ll make a lot of music and I will show a lot of videos.

Come sta andando il tour europeo? Molti cantanti a causa dei recenti avvenimenti stanno cancellando tutte le date in Europa, non hai paura?
No, non ho paura. Quando è il momento di andare, è il momento di andare. Ciò che più conta per me è il mio cane, il mio unico amore, Lola. Non me ne frega un cazzo di tutto il resto, non m’interessa di quel genere di cose. Mi sono divertito un sacco, è stato fantastico e ho adorato quest’esperienza. Non ho paura di queste cose, non ho paura di niente. La paura non esiste nella mia vita perché, ringraziando il cielo, non temo un altro uomo e non ho paura della vendetta o cose simili, ecco. È il piano di Dio. Dev’essere così, questo è ciò che mi piace pensare. Se Dio vuole che io vada, allora è il momento di andare. Se vuole che io resti, allora resto. È semplice.
Recentemente Marley Marl, Craig G e Donald D sono stati in Italia per una jam e hanno detto che negli Usa in pochi seguono veramente la scena underground, che solo gente come Jay Z (ad esempio) ha molto seguito. Cosa ne pensi?
Non credo sia vero. Credo che, indipendentemente da dove mi trovi, se in Canada, in America, in Europa o in Australia, i miei concerti sono tutti uguali. Il mainstream sarà sempre mainstream. L’underground è chiamato così per una ragione: non è per le masse. Prendi Drake, ad esempio, io adoro la sua musica, ma non faccio musica come lui e non riempirò gli stadi con quarantamila persone perché non rappo di donne e di amore e non produco hit radiofoniche. Il mio è un piccolo pubblico, se faccio un concerto e vengono cinquecento persone invece di cinquemila, va bene. Se ne vengono mille invece di dieci mila, va bene comunque. Be’, anch’io giro il mondo, quindi per me è la stessa cosa. Conduco una bella vita, è una benedizione, ne sono orgoglioso. Dipende tutto dal percorso artistico che decidi di intraprendere ed io preferisco essere fedele a ciò che faccio ed essere circondato dalle persone a cui piace la mia musica, piuttosto che fare qualcosa di diverso per motivi economici e rischiare di perder tutto. Non riuscirei più a guardarmi allo specchio. Ad ogni modo, non c’è molta promozione attorno alla scena hip-hop americana, davvero. Magari non tutti i ragazzi lo dicono, ma non c’è. Puoi essere underground, ma devi essere costante e probabilmente molti non caricano nuovi video o nuova musica costantemente e non organizzano tour. Io ho appena fatto il mio centosedicesimo concerto, ad esempio. Per cui se non lavori in un certo modo, è normale pensare che in pochi seguano la scena underground. Tech N9ne, Vinnie Paz and Evidence, uno dei miei migliori amici, spaccano e sono tutti underground. Ma bisogna impegnarsi ed essere sempre attivi. Sempre.
Infine: a inizio mese hai fatto uscire il mixtape “Underground Monsters” e da luglio sei fuori con “Silver Tongue Devil”, com’è il feedback dei fans?
Silver Tongue Devil è stato al secondo posto nella classifica canadese e in quella di Billboard e sempre secondo album nelle classifiche di due paesi e credo che il feedback sia stato ottimo. Underground Monsters è stato concepito più come un mixtape con altri giovani rapper a cui ho voluto dare un’opportunità per essere ascoltati e credo che molti lo abbiano apprezzato, ma Silver Tongue Devil ha avuto un riscontro decisamente positivo.
Sei molto produttivo, in un anno riesci a far uscire anche 2/3 progetti: stai già lavorando a qualcosa di nuovo?
Sì, il disco appena uscito è prodotto interamente da Evidence e ne ho già pronto un altro e ho altri 30/40 pezzi pronti in attesa di uscire. Credo che quando tornerò a casa, dopo aver terminato il tour in Europa con 60 date e quelli in Australia e America, mi prenderò quattro mesi di pausa e andrò ogni giorno in studio a registrare e produrrò un sacco di musica e video.
